<p>I&#8217;ve been in international trade for over a decade, both as a business owner shipping goods and as an advisor, assisting women entrepreneurs. In the pre-pandemic world, in-person meetings and tradeshows were key strategies to meet buyers and expand your networks.</p>



<p>Now, more than ever before, online selling offers incredible opportunities to reach new customers all over the world!</p>



<p>According to a recent report, “<a href="https://www.mckinsey.com/industries/retail/our-insights/moving-past-friend-or-foe-how-to-win-with-digital-marketplaces" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">As a result of marked shifts in consumer behavior during the COVID-19 pandemic, digitization has accelerated even further: 40 percent of consumers are buying more online than they had previously done.</a>” Global e-commerce is expected to grow <a href="https://www.emarketer.com/content/worldwide-ecommerce-will-approach-5-trillion-this-year" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">about $5 trillion</a> in 2021. Mobile commerce is on the rise and is expected to reach <a href="https://www.shopify.com/enterprise/mobile-commerce-future-trends" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">$275 billion globally by 2025</a>.</p>



<p>So if you&#8217;re looking to expand your customer base, e-commerce is an immense opportunity to get into international markets. </p>



<p>Now don&#8217;t get me wrong—just like any business start-up, international e-commerce has its challenges and you need to prepare well to maximize digital opportunities. Remember, anytime goods and services cross borders, you have to follow the trade rules and regulations. </p>



<p>But you have to start somewhere, and you don&#8217;t want to leave all those potential customers hanging, so what do you need to consider? <h3 class="wp-block-heading">1. eCommerce makes it easy to connect across the world</h3>



<p>Creating an online store is a less complex market entry strategy. If you have a well-designed web store it is easier to access potential customers in foreign markets. </p>



<p>I worked with a client who used her website and Instagram as her major marketing platforms for her cosmetic business. She was pleasantly surprised when her BC-sourced and manufactured products found a market in Asia. </p>



<p>Though her foray into international markets started with a couple of queries from potential buyers, she followed it up with a sound business plan focused on e-exports. Her business is an example of growing internationally even without opening a single brick and mortar office in Asia.</p>

<h3 class="wp-block-heading">2. Digital marketplaces bring the people to you</h3>



<p>There are a number of online marketplaces such as <a href="https://www.alibaba.com/?__redirected__=1" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Alibaba</a>, <a href="https://www.ebay.ca/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">e-Bay</a>, and <a href="https://www.amazon.com/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Amazon</a> where you can sell. As they already have a wide customer base, it&#8217;s easier to reach more clients in foreign markets.</p>



<p>You can use their fulfillment services or decide to do it on your own. Fulfillment process is fee-based, but it can help in keeping your business competitive. Fast delivery, storage, inventory management, and easy returns are a few of such benefits. If you decide to do it yourself, it may be difficult to compete with such efficient processes. Determine what works for you based on your business capabilities.</p>



<p>Did you know that there is <a href="https://amazon.in/canadastore" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Canada store</a> on Amazon’s India platform featuring several Canadian products? Canada’s Trade Commissioner Service (TCS) in India worked with Canadian companies and Amazon to create this store. This is a win-win opportunity for BC based businesses as e-commerce sector is growing rapidly in India. </p>



<p>According to a <a href="https://www.statista.com/statistics/792047/india-e-commerce-market-size/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">report</a>, the market value of this industry is expected to grow to US$200 billion by 2027. You can also find <a href="https://canada.tmall.com/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Canada Pavilion</a> on <a href="https://www.alibaba.com/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Alibaba</a>, which provides access to consumers in China. The Trade Commissioner Service’s guidebook, <a href="http://tradecommissioner.gc.ca/world-monde/china_e-commerce_guide-cybercommerce_chine.aspx?lang=eng" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">An Introduction to e-Commerce in China</a> can help you understand the local online commerce ecosystem.</p>

<h3 class="wp-block-heading">3. 24/7 selling means you make money while you sleep</h3>



<p>Global markets are typically in different time zones. So, even when you are offline, you can still be selling! </p>



<p>Targeted advertising, <a href="https://www.womensenterprise.ca/business-skills-training-women/publications/digital-marketing-resources-training-on-demand/">SEO</a>, quality content on <a href="https://www.womensenterprise.ca/business-skills-training-women/publications/digital-marketing-resources-training-on-demand/">social media channels</a> such as Facebook and Instagram are your go-to marketing tools to provide enhanced customer experience round the clock. </p>



<p>I recently worked with a client who sells arts products and was researching potential foreign markets. Her research showed potential customers in Australia. A well-researched and targeted social media campaign geared towards customers in a different time zone market helped her tap into new customers.</p>

<h3 class="wp-block-heading">4. Are you ready for e-exports?</h3>



<p>It is important to look at your business model and assess your international e-commerce readiness. This will involve asking a lot of questions:</p>



<ul class="wp-block-list"><li>Is online selling a major part of your business plan? </li><li>Do you have an e-commerce growth strategy as part of your export plan? </li><li>Do you have a fully operational e-commerce website? If not, how and where do you begin? If yes, which foreign market do you start with? </li><li>Have you assessed your supply chain capabilities? </li></ul>

<h3 class="wp-block-heading">5. Can you adapt your product or service to the local markets?</h3>



<p>It is important to assess your product or service suitability for international trade. Some products may require changes including labelling, packaging, translation or features to meet safety requirements.</p>



<p>You may need to provide language options on your website for your target international market. If you are specifically targeting a couple of foreign markets, consider creating landing pages in the local languages. </p>



<p>Browsing your website in the local language makes it more attractive and comfortable for a foreign buyer. Creating a Frequently asked questions (FAQs) page and your customer care information in local language will also add value.</p>



<p>Use professional companies for translation work so that your business message is not “lost in translation” and is culturally appropriate. <a href="https://www.inc.com/geoffrey-james/the-20-worst-brand-translations-of-all-time.html" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Here is an interesting article on how overlooking this can lead to marketing blunders</a> and create a mess.</p>

<h3 class="wp-block-heading">6. How will you accept payments?</h3>



<p>Will it be in US dollars or can the payment be made in any currency? Think about it from the customer’s perspective. </p>



<p>No matter where you sell, it&#8217;s important to make the payment process easy and secure. There are several options available, including integrating the payment process directly into your website, using third party payment providers, and accepting e-transfers. </p>



<p>Research popular e-payment tools in your target market. Digital wallets are a popular method of payment in some countries.</p>

<h3 class="wp-block-heading">7. How will you ship?</h3>



<p>Often when we talk about international trade, this is the first thing people think of: huge shipping containers crossing the globe. In fact, exporting can be as small as mailing an envelope to Ontario or doing consulting work for a company in California.</p>



<p>Either way, you have to comply with rules and regulations in your target market, so it&#8217;s best to do the research up front.</p>



<p>Are there any specific rules related to your products such as labelling, safety requirements, and documentation? Certain products may require specific permits and licenses before you ship them. Consider working with professionals such as freight forwarders and customs brokers to avoid unnecessary delays and wastage of money. <p>Immigrant-owned businesses have a positive impact on international trade.&nbsp; They are key drivers for innovation, economic growth, and can play a crucial role in Canada’s successful export story.</p>



<p>Immigrants also diversify international markets as they are inclined to export beyond the United States and focus more on emerging markets. A <a href="https://www.conferenceboard.ca/e-library/abstract.aspx?did=6250" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">report</a> by the Conference Board of Canada found that <a href="https://www.edc.ca/en/blog/export-strength-for-businesses.html" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">12 percent of immigrant-owned businesses are exporters that sell goods and services to non-U.S. markets compared with 7 per cent for non-immigrant businesses.</a>&nbsp; Another <a href="https://www.gemconsortium.org/report/gem-2012-global-report">report</a> found that a majority of immigrants were <a href="https://hbr.org/2016/10/why-are-immigrants-more-entrepreneurial" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">entrepreneurs</a>. Recent immigrants are also more likely to strengthen Canada’s trade connections with their country of origin.</p>



<p>Here are a few reasons why immigrants may have a competitive advantage in being successful exporters:</p>



<ul class="wp-block-list"><li><strong>Risk takers</strong>: Moving to a new country and setting up roots in a new place is not an easy experience. One of the barriers immigrants face is recognition of their educational degrees in their new home country. This challenge usually turns into a motivator for them to consider entrepreneurship as a viable career option. Living in different places helps them adapt and innovate in their professional lives.&nbsp; Generally, immigrants tend to be more resilient and natural risk-takers.</li></ul>



<ul class="wp-block-list"><li><strong>Leveraging experience:</strong> Many professional skills are portable. For example, good communication, technological expertise, and sales proficiency are a few of the skills that can be profitably employed anywhere. It is especially true in the case of international trade. For example, consider a tech immigrant entrepreneur who has moved to Canada from a developing country and has set up her own innovative educational device firm that can help educate children from low income families in developing societies. Her local networks, professional experience, and cultural understanding can help this entrepreneur overcome several barriers if she decides to export to her country of origin and to other developing societies.</li></ul>



<ul class="wp-block-list"><li><strong>Cross Cultural connections</strong>: Bicultural competencies provide competitive advantage for immigrants as they get into international markets. Ties to the country of origin can be very productive, especially for newcomers who maintain strong connections to their personal and professional networks in their country of origin. Knowledge of the local business culture, customer trends, and local language in their country of origin provides them an edge as an exporter. Dealing with different cultures also makes immigrants comfortable in identifying global business opportunities and expanding to more international markets.</li></ul>



<ul class="wp-block-list"><li><strong>Communication</strong>: Immigrants are linguistically more diversified which helps if you are negotiating with clients in an international market. If you know the language of you target international market, it is easy to negotiate as you understand the nuances of the local language. According to Stats Canada, “<a href="https://www150.statcan.gc.ca/n1/pub/89-657-x/89-657-x2019001-eng.htm" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">In 2016, nearly three quarters (72.5%) of immigrants had a language other than English or French as their mother tongue, compared with 50.7% in 1971. Similarly, an increasing proportion of immigrants speak an “other” language most often at home.</a>” From my personal experience as an importer, I experienced firsthand how knowing the local language gave me an advantage when negotiating with my suppliers.</li></ul>



<ul class="wp-block-list"><li><strong>Networks: </strong>Immigrants can easily connect markets because of their networks and associations in the local communities in their country of origin. In any business, developing relationships with customers and suppliers takes time. Immigrants have a competitive advantage because of their existing networks in international markets, especially their country of origin. Such connections can also solidify effective partnerships in the target market, provide valuable market intelligence, human and social capital and can help in taking effective international trade decisions.</li></ul>

<p>If you are an exporter or thinking of exporting to the United States of America(USA), you may have heard of the Canada-United States-Mexico Agreement (CUSMA) which came into effect on July 1, 2020. As the US is the biggest market for Canadian goods, the agreement has a deep impact on Canadian exporters since it provides improved access to this critically prime market.</p>



<p>Canada, the United States and Mexico form a tight-knit trade community. The roots of this relationship are in geographical proximity, people-to-people connections, and a strong desire for the economic prosperity of the region. Since 1994, the North American Free Trade Agreement (NAFTA) helped create export opportunities and a more level playing field for its member countries by gradually eliminating tariffs and other trade barriers. It has now seamlessly transitioned to (CUSMA).</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading"><strong>What is CUSMA?</strong></h2>



<p>You may hear the names CUSMA, USMCA and MUSCA for this agreement. All three names refer to the same agreement. While in Canada it is known as CUSMA; in the US it is called United States-Mexico-Canada Agreement (USMCA) and in Mexico, it is referred to as MUSCA. CUSMA is a modernization of NAFTA and provides improved procedures to make it easier for goods to move across Canada, USA and Mexico borders.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading"><strong>So, what has changed?</strong></h2>



<p>While a lot remains unchanged from the original NAFTA or has been updated to better project how international trade currently works, there are some significant changes too. Below are a few highlights:</p>



<h3 class="wp-block-heading"><strong>Certification of Origin</strong></h3>



<p>Unlike the NAFTA certificate of origin, CUSMA does not require a prescribed format. Certain data elements regarding certification of origin can be included in commercial invoices or any other documentation. The minimum data elements should include information about the exporter/importer/producer, description and tariff classification of goods, origin criteria, and blanket period(for multiple shipments of identical goods for a specified period of up to 12 months). This certification may be completed by the exporter, producer or importer of the goods. It may be submitted electronically. You can find more information on the certificate of origin and an example of the certification <a href="https://www.cbsa-asfc.gc.ca/services/cusma-aceum/cog-com-eng.html" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">here</a>.</p>



<h3 class="wp-block-heading"><strong>Auto Sector</strong></h3>



<p>The revised rules focus on maintaining a large North American content in the <a href="https://www.edc.ca/en/article/usmca-stability-for-auto-sector.html" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">auto sector</a>. The total North American content in vehicles has gone from 62.5% (Under NAFTA) to 75%. 70% of all steel and aluminum used in auto production needs to originate in North America. 40% of a passenger car (45% in the case of a light truck) must be produced by workers paid an average labour wage of USD $16/hour.</p>



<h3 class="wp-block-heading"><em><strong>De minimis</strong></em><strong> threshold</strong></h3>



<p><strong> </strong><a href="https://www.international.gc.ca/trade-commerce/assets/pdfs/agreements-accords/cusma-aceum/r-cusma-07.pdf" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">De Minimis</a> duties and taxes have changed for shipments under CUSMA<strong>.</strong> Canada has agreed to $150 for customs duties and $40 for taxes. This rule only applies to goods shipped from USor Mexico to Canada by courier.</p>



<h3 class="wp-block-heading"><strong>Dispute Settlement</strong></h3>



<p>The <a href="https://www.international.gc.ca/trade-commerce/trade-agreements-accords-commerciaux/agr-acc/cusma-aceum/state-etat.aspx?lang=eng" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">dispute settlement chapter</a> details the mechanism for resolving disputes between the member countries. Disagreements are to be resolved via cooperative means such as consultations. However, if these do not work out, the agreement provides for arbitral panels.</p>



<h3 class="wp-block-heading"><strong>Agriculture</strong></h3>



<p>The agri-food sector is a key element in the Canadian economic story and it has seen incredible growth in the past two decades in North America. Canada has protected the supply management system for dairy farmers. New USA market access has been provided to Canada for refined sugar and sugar-containing products, as well as certain dairy products. The USA has been provided new access to the Canadian market for dairy, poultry, and egg products. <h3 class="wp-block-heading"><strong>Digital trade</strong></h3>



<p>The digital landscape has changed during the past few years with the increase in e-commerce activities. CUSMA reflects the present digital trade realities. Customs duties, fees, or other charges on or in connection with the importation or exportation of digital products transmitted electronically <a href="https://www.international.gc.ca/trade-commerce/assets/pdfs/agreements-accords/cusma-aceum/cusma-19.pdf" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">will not be allowed</a>. It also protects against forced disclosure of proprietary source code and algorithms.</p>



<p>CUSMA includes a formal review of the agreement every six years. While the agreement will terminate after 16 years, the Parties to CUSMA can agree to extend it for a further 16 years after each regular review.</p>



<p>The North American trade bloc offers immense opportunities to women exporters. USA and Canada have a unique trade relationship because of several factors including a common language and shared connections. These shared commonalities have encouraged and supported close trade connections. About 75 percent of Canadian exports are to the USA. Several USA states such as Michigan, Illinois, California, and New York have close economic ties with Canada. For example, Michigan annually imports about <a href="https://www.tradecommissioner.gc.ca/tcs-sdc/united-states-of-america-etats-unis-amerique/michigan.aspx?lang=eng&amp;wbdisable=true" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">$45.2 billion</a> in goods from Canada. Mexico is also a priority market for Canadian exports. In 2018, Canada exported goods about <a href="https://lop.parl.ca/sites/PublicWebsite/default/en_CA/ResearchPublications/TradeAndInvestment/2019519E" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">$8.2 billion</a> to this market. CUSMA is a step in the right direction and provides momentum to Canadian exporters by facilitating the trade process.</p>

<p>When a group of dynamic women entrepreneurs come together for a day of networking, learning and connections, wonderful things can happen.</p>



<p>On September 14-20, <a rel="noreferrer noopener" aria-label="Women’s Enterprise Organizations of Canada (opens in a new tab)" href="https://weoc.ca/" target="_blank">Women’s Enterprise Organizations of Canada</a> helped to organize an incoming trade mission of about 20 women business owners from <a href="https://www.vdu.de/home.html" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener" aria-label="VdU (opens in a new tab)">VdU</a>, the association of German women entrepreneurs, to Edmonton and Vancouver. </p>



<p>To round out the end of their trip, <a href="https://www.womensenterprise.ca">Women’s Enterprise Centre</a> (WEC), in collaboration with national and regional partners, <a rel="noreferrer noopener" aria-label="Export Development Canada (opens in a new tab)" href="https://www.edc.ca/" target="_blank">Export Development Canada</a>, the <a rel="noreferrer noopener" aria-label="Trade Commissioner Service (opens in a new tab)" href="https://www.tradecommissioner.gc.ca/trade_commissioners-delegues_commerciaux/index.aspx?lang=eng" target="_blank">Trade Commissioner Service</a> and the <a href="https://www.vancouvereconomic.com/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener" aria-label="Vancouver Economic Commission (opens in a new tab)">Vancouver Economic Commission</a>, hosted the delegation for “Building Bridges,” a series of international networking and learning events. </p>



<p>As the WEC Export Advisor, I joined the WEC team in welcoming German and Canadian delegates who represented various business sectors including life sciences, digital technology, transformative learning, consulting services, recruiting services, food products, electrotechnical engineering and software services.</p>



<p>These meetings and events are so important to help women entrepreneurs make personal connections with their counterparts in other countries – both to make business connections and also to decrease the intimidation factor of trading internationally. </p>



<p>Here are my impressions of the events.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading">SETTING THE STAGE: AN INTIMATE GATHERING</h2>



<p>On September 17, Canadian and German delegates met at the beautiful private residence of Lois Nahirney, CEO of dnaPower. It was a chance for the Canadian and German women entrepreneurs to connect over dinner and share their entrepreneurial experiences while admiring the view of Vancouver.</p>



<p>I could feel the excitement in the room as delegates were busy introducing themselves and learning about each other. It was a fun-filled, relaxed environment providing excellent opportunities for delegates of both countries to learn about their counterparts’ business cultures and make personal connections.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading">CREATING CONNECTIONS: A DAY OF NETWORKING+LEARNING</h2>



<p>September 18 was a day of micro-meetings, connections, learning, and networking.</p>



<h3 class="wp-block-heading">Nailing elevator pitches</h3>



<p>Every participant was given an opportunity to pitch their business. People were making notes, and I could see its impact in the networking that followed later, as women entrepreneurs got busy connecting with those businesses that they found were good matches for their business growth.</p>



<h3 class="wp-block-heading">Panel on empowering female investors &amp; female investment</h3>



<p>Next, we dove into an informative panel featuring Jill Earthy of Female Funders, Bonnie Foley-Wong of Pique Ventures, Gordana Apic of Cell networks GNBH and Claudia Grobe-Leege, VDU and German W20 representative.</p>



<p>In an interactive discussion, moderated by Lois Nahirney of dnaPower, the panellists spoke about barriers faced by women entrepreneurs and why it’s important to have a diversity of perspectives in investment.</p>



<h4 class="wp-block-heading">Here are some of the takeaways:</h4>



<p>There is a cultural style barrier that makes investors’ expectations unrealistic. Realistic projections by women are ignored by such investors.</p>



<ul class="wp-block-list">
<li>An internal barrier is the feeling of impostor syndrome. Many women feel that they do not belong and do not deserve to be successful.</li>



<li>The systemic issues are enormous. Women get paid less and the work environment is not flexible. It’s not that women are not asking, but the system has not been adequately designed for them.</li>



<li>Women are risk aware, more astute, and want to understand the investment lingo and the process so they can make sound decisions and see better returns.</li>



<li>It’s important to de-mystify investment. There are different financing models, even for smaller investors. There are mechanisms in place now to make investing easier.</li>



<li>We are gradually seeing a shift as there is more awareness about diversity in investing. Better decision-making happens and opportunities are created when there is a diversity of investors.</li>
</ul>



<h3 class="wp-block-heading">Meeting their match</h3>



<p>The networking and B2B matchmaking sessions that followed the panel discussion were buzzing with impactful conversations.</p>



<p>I spoke with many delegates at the event. It was so great to know that while many Canadian delegates were actively pursuing expanding to the EU specifically Germany, German women entrepreneurs were keen to develop business connections in North America.</p>



<p>It was indeed a win-win situation as the networking and matchmaking opportunities made such business connections possible for women exporters in both countries.</p>



<p>It was an exciting day, but we weren’t done yet! The post-event dinner was a great way for everyone to unwind after the eventful day, and an opportunity to exchange last-minute contact information and stay connected.</p>



<h3 class="wp-block-heading">The world needs more of Vancouver</h3>



<p>We look forward to participating in such opportunities to support BC women entrepreneurs in international trade and promote BC as a place to do business. </p>



<p>As Catherine Warner, CEO of the Vancouver Economic Commission said in her welcome address “the world needs more of Vancouver… Vancouver is a city whose progressive values of sustainability, diversity, equality are the values that great businesses around the world aspire to.”</p>



<p>All-in-all, I’d say this was a very successful few days. Over half of the Canadian delegates have said they followed up with a German business owner since the event. </p>



<p>And one delegate shared “I really enjoyed the event and would recommend it to others. I would definitely consider participating in a Canadian Trade Mission to Germany in the future.”</p>

ready</a> you can decide how you want to enter a new market. Let us evaluate
how an agent or distributor can help with exports.</p>



<p><strong>Agents:</strong></p>



<p>Agents work as your business representative in the local
market and can use their local networks to obtain orders for your products.
They usually work on commission. They can support in various ways including:</p>



<ul class="wp-block-list"><li>providing local market intelligence</li><li>advising on local regulatory requirements</li><li>providing advice on product adaptation and
client expectations </li><li>helping with end user feedback </li><li>assisting in forming programs and policies for
the local market including&nbsp; warranties,
guarantees</li></ul>



<p><strong>Distributors:</strong></p>



<p>Many companies decide to work with distributors because of
their large networks. </p>



<p>A distributor:</p>



<ul class="wp-block-list"><li>has more control over marketing, pricing etc</li><li>is responsible for storing and transporting goods
in the foreign market</li><li>can provide insights into the local market and
better customer satisfaction</li><li>can be an important source of information
regarding business processes in the local market</li></ul>



<p><strong>Difference between
Agents and Distributors:</strong></p>



<p>Some of the differences are:</p>



<ul class="wp-block-list"><li>An agent does not take title to the goods and
thus will not assume any risks. A distributor has control over goods and will
maintain an inventory to sell to clients.</li><li>An agent can make suggestions about pricing but
does not have the final say in it.&nbsp; A
distributor decides on the price that allows him to make a profit. A
distributor may want to buy from you at wholesale price as he/she assumes all
risks.</li><li>A distributor will accept payment from end
users. An agent usually does not accept payment directly.</li></ul>



<p>It is important to do your research before you decide to enter
into an agreement with an agent or a distributor. Prepare a set of questions to
get more information. Below are a few suggestions:</p>



<ul class="wp-block-list"><li>What is their experience in selling similar
products?</li><li>What networks dos they have in the local market?
Are they part of local chambers of commerce or similar organisations?</li><li>What major accounts have they handled in the
past? What are the main marketing successes?</li><li>Is there a conflict of interest if they decide
to enter into an agreement with the present exporter?</li><li>What type of software do they use to track
inventory and customer feedback management?</li><li>Do they create a marketing campaigning tailored
to products that they represent?</li><li>Can they provide references?</li></ul>



<p>Researching and interviewing prospects will help you make the
right choice. </p>

										<content:encoded><![CDATA[<p>Did you know that a newly-launched trade deal with the Asia-Pacific region, will allow Canadian exporters access to almost 500 million consumers in 11 countries?</p>
<p>Notebook in hand, on February 11, I set out to get to the bottom of this new agreement and how it will benefit women business owners at a seminar called <em>Expanding Your Business Horizons: Comprehensive and Progressive Agreement for Trans-Pacific Partnership (CPTPP)</em>.</p>
<p>Presented by Global Affairs Canada, in partnership with the Asia Pacific Foundation of Canada, the event hosted trade experts, who explained the CPTPP and its impacts, an open house with the Trade Commissioner Service, plus BC-based entrepreneurs who shared their stories of successfully tapping into the global market.</p>
<p>Here’s what you need to know:</p>
<h2>What is the CPTPP?</h2>
<p>The <a href="https://international.gc.ca/trade-commerce/trade-agreements-accords-commerciaux/agr-acc/cptpp-ptpgp/index.aspx?lang=eng" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Comprehensive and Progressive Agreement for Trans-Pacific Partnership (CPTPP)</a> is a free trade agreement between Canada and Australia, Brunei, Chile, Japan, Malaysia, Mexico, New Zealand, Peru, Singapore and Vietnam.</p>
<h2>How it might benefit you</h2>
<ol>
<li><strong>Tariff elimination:</strong> Once fully implemented, 99% of <a href="https://international.gc.ca/trade-commerce/trade-agreements-accords-commerciaux/agr-acc/cptpp-ptpgp/tariff-elimination-droits_de_douane.aspx?lang=eng" target="_blank" rel="noopener">tariff lines</a> among the CPTPP countries will be duty-free. You can find out if your business benefits from tariff reduction or elimination using the <a href="https://www.tariffinder.ca/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">free Canada Tariff Finder tool</a>.</li>
<li><strong>More opportunities:</strong> The Asia-Pacific region economy is growing rapidly. Access to Japan, the third largest economy in the world, and growing markets such as Malaysia and Vietnam will provide more opportunities for Canadian businesses.</li>
<li><strong>Benefits to a broad range of sectors:</strong> The trade agreement will help several business sectors including agriculture, seafood, minerals, forestry and financial services.</li>
<li><strong>Expanded access to government procurement:</strong> Governments are usually one of the biggest buyers of goods and services. Canadian businesses will now have guaranteed access to government procurement opportunities, such as construction services contracts procured by the Department of Infrastructure in Australia. The agreement provides rules on non-discrimination and transparency in the procurement process.</li>
<li><strong>Simplified procedures for temporary entry:</strong> This will facilitate the growth of trade in goods, services and investment. Rules for work permits have also been made easier.</li>
</ol>

										<content:encoded><![CDATA[<p>Considering business growth options in 2019? You can boost your business through exports. If you are selling just to the domestic market, you are limiting your growth potential.<br />
In 2016, BC’s small businesses were the source of “<a href="https://www2.gov.bc.ca/assets/gov/employment-business-and-economic-development/business-management/small-business/sb_profile.pdf">43 per cent of the province’s total exports and shipped almost $18.0 billion worth of merchandise from the province</a>”<br />
For businesses new to exporting, it can seem overwhelming initially. Before you move into overseas markets, you need to prepare well.<br />
Start by asking these ten key questions.</p>
<h3>1. What are your goals for entering the international market?</h3>
<p>Just ‘exporting products/services” is not a productive goal. Create specific, measurable, achievable, relevant, and time-based (SMART) goals. Developing specific goals will help in deciding the best market entry strategy.</p>
<h3>2. How committed are you to making exports your key goal for business growth?</h3>
<p>Lack of commitments is one of the key reasons for failure. Exporting will involve new challenges including travel, learning new skills, setting up new business processes etc. You must be committed to stay the course.</p>
<h3>3. Do you have a plan in place?</h3>
<p>Moving to a new market can be rewarding –but nothing works without a plan. Doing it right will help you navigate international trade with more confidence. Some of the important elements to consider in your export plan are</p>
<ul>
<li>product adaptation</li>
<li>logistics</li>
<li>documentation and government regulations in the target market</li>
<li>copyright and trademarks</li>
<li>exchange rates and payment processes</li>
</ul>
<h3>4. Have you picked the best new market for your expansion?</h3>
<p>Targeting the right international market for your goods/services requires research. The good news is you can find a lot of information on countries and various business sectors online. You can find valuable data on several websites including<a href="https://www.edc.ca/en/country-info.html" target="_blank" rel="noopener"> Export Development Canada</a> and the <a href="https://tradecommissioner.gc.ca/trade_commissioners-delegues_commerciaux/country_info_reports-info_pays_rapports.aspx?lang=eng" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Trade Commissioner Service</a> (TCS). Participating in a <a href="https://www.womensenterprise.ca/why-trade-mission-should-be-part-your-export-plan/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">trade mission</a> can also get you a hands-on experience of international trade.</p>
<h3>5. Do you have sufficient resources in your company to support your international expansion?</h3>
<p>You need to assess the financial capacity of your business to support exporting. Identify the team members best suited to support and execute a foreign expansion project and get them on board with your plan.</p>
<h3>6. What is your market entry strategy?</h3>
<p>Each country has its own set of regulations and unique market situations. How do you plan to enter your target market? Export directly? Form a partnership with a local company in your target market? There are several options for selling to an overseas market. (Note: my next blog will discuss agents and distributors )</p>
<h3>7. Have you researched the regulatory requirements in your target market?</h3>
<p>Exporting is always regulated. Do you know if your target international market has any <a href="https://www.edc.ca/en/article/how-tariffs-work-for-business.html" target="_blank" rel="noopener">tariffs</a> or quotas that can be a barrier to your market entry? Canada’s <a href="https://www.international.gc.ca/trade-commerce/trade-agreements-accords-commerciaux/agr-acc/index.aspx?lang=eng" target="_blank" rel="noopener">trade agreements</a> facilitate easy flow of goods and services globally. Find out if your business can benefit from it.</p>
<h3>8. How do you plan to get your goods to the target market?</h3>
<p>You’ll need to consider important logistic factors such as packing, labelling, preparation of shipping documents, Incoterms, transportation, insurance, and custom brokers. Consider engaging freight forwarders who can professionally get your goods to the target market.</p>
<h3>9. Have you researched the business culture of your target market?</h3>
<p>Business is conducted differently in different markets. Local customs, language, community dynamics, educational standards are some of the factors that will influence your product adaptation and marketing strategies.</p>
<h3>10. Do you have an exit plan in place if things don’t work out?</h3>
<p>You may enter into an international business partnership to gain access to the local market. If the partnership does not work or if you want to withdraw from the overseas market, ensure you have an exit strategy.<br />

<p>A song, dance and inspiring personal stories! Stories of turning weaknesses into strengths, getting empowered, setting audacious goals, and overcoming barriers to reach those goals. This was my experience when I recently attended PowHERtalks in Vancouver, a well-attended event that featured women who spoke on a wide range of topics including leadership, business, sports, arts, community building, and physical and emotional wellness.</p>
<p>From a food philosopher to a photographer, from an award-winning mortgage broker to a brand strategist, and from social entrepreneurs to business coaches, these women are making an impact in our communities. Eighteen women were each given nine minutes to share their personal journeys, challenges, successes and their wisdom and every one of them packed a punch.</p>
<p>Below are a few takeaways from the PowHERtalks event:</p>
<ol>
<li><strong>We are all connected</strong>. Everybody’s experience contributes to and offers great teaching and value to another person.</li>
<li><strong>Realize “YOU” are important.</strong> Women are so busy taking care of others that they forget themselves.</li>
<li><strong>Always create possibilities.</strong> The way you respond to another person makes a difference. Compassion, kindness, and empathy open doors of opportunities.</li>
<li><strong>Be authentic.</strong> Do not justify reasonable behaviour. Authenticity is powerful, and peaceful and it sets you free.</li>
<li><strong>Do not prejudge. </strong>Bring your whole self to interaction and see people for who they really are instead of what they do.</li>
<li><strong>Do social good.</strong> Do something for others every day. Bring positive change in the world. Be of service to others.</li>
<li><strong>Conflict is an opportunity.</strong> Conflict is not always negative. Step into it and you may discover opportunities.</li>
<li>C<strong>reate entrepreneurial communities.</strong> Economies thrive when entrepreneurial hubs are strong. Recruit champions and supporters.</li>
<li><strong>Delegate. </strong>We cannot do it alone. Look for support.</li>
<li><strong>Be present where others are</strong>. The magic happens at the periphery. Go beyond your business. If you want to create a transformational business, you must be present where others are present.</li>
<li><strong>Be the change.</strong> Change is never easy. We have to work at it. Know what you stand for. Know what your values are. If you know who you are, you can always reinvent yourself with grace.</li>
