When a passion for social sustainability is combined with delicious, ethically sourced chocolate, you get the GOOD Chocolatier. Mara Mennicken was new to Canada from Germany, continuing her studies in social enterprise, when she had the fortunate chance to meet a French chocolatier at the farmers’ market. After trying his rich, hand-crafted chocolate bars and learning about the business, she uncovered a strong alignment in their ethics and business values. Mara spent two years working alongside him before eventually purchasing the business outright and growing the company into the GOOD Chocolatier.

Mara brings her social and environmental sustainability education to the business, offering artisan, ethically sourced chocolate bars, truffles, bonbons, and ganaches. Sourced from Ecuador, each cocoa bean is organic, fairly traded, and produced without the use of GMOs or fertilizers.

As a business owner, Mara believes in her responsibility to make positive social change. She does so by creating inclusive workspaces so she can prioritize hiring adults on the autism spectrum.

While searching for resources to support her small business, Mara discovered WeBC’s free programs. She started with the Peer Mentorship Program and stayed connected to WeBC after the program ended.

Later that year, Mara reconnected with Melanie Rupp, Senior Director, Loans & Advisory Services, who suggested the loan program to grow her business. Initially hesitant to take out a loan, Mara was encouraged by multiple colleagues who recommended WeBC’s support. Her loan was granted, which was used to purchase new equipment to increase product production and expand with more distributors.

Mara appreciated the support she received throughout the process and was impressed with the financial assistance and guidance from the WeBC team. As a solopreneur, Mara is grateful to organizations like WeBC for supporting her through each phase of her journey.

Client Q&A

Q: How did you get into the chocolate business?

I met a chocolatier at a farmer’s market during my first week of university. He was a French chocolatier, and it was my first time trying artisan craft chocolate—and I was blown away. I thought, how is it that I eat chocolate every day, and people rave about chocolate from Belgium, Germany and Switzerland, yet I’ve never tasted anything so pure?

So, I stood there at his booth, buying up all the chocolate, while he explained the benefits—how it’s good for the heart, the brain and overall health. But most chocolate isn’t made this way. I thought, “I’m a student; I probably can’t afford a $10 bar every day,” but I asked him if I could volunteer in exchange for chocolate. And that’s what we did for about two years.

Eventually, I did some paid work for him, which is when the idea of a social enterprise came up. I spoke to him about it because I felt his business values were so closely aligned with mine. When he decided to move back to France, that’s when I took the business over.

Q: Can you share your experience with WeBC’s loan program?

At a BC Food and Beverage event, I connected with Melanie Rupp. She told me about all the loan programs and encouraged me to reach out if I was interested.

It took me a long time to even think about taking a loan, knowing what I needed it for, but multiple people recommended it to me, so I worked with one of their advisors to apply.

I found it amazing because I wasn’t aware there was so much support. I thought it was just a loan, and then you manage how you repay it, but then you also get a financial advisor and have access to a whole team. That was such a big plus because I think even if you think you know finances, managing a loan and doing the best with it is different.

I felt like planning for the next few years was outside my scope, but the team at WeBC showed me the ropes. I was so grateful to have somebody from the lender side who genuinely wanted me to succeed and was there to help me through it.

Q: What were the specific challenges you faced that the loan helped you overcome?

The loan was for new equipment. I needed a tempering machine and two chocolate grinders to increase production capacity. My business was at full capacity in our space in Kitsilano, and I needed the new equipment to be able to produce four times as much, so I could expand to Ontario and work with a second distributor. At that point, I couldn’t even think about selling more because I didn’t have the capacity to produce more.

We didn’t have more to invest in the equipment and still make sure we had enough for cacao, so the loan from WeBC was essential to keep us going. I’m grateful for it; it made me take a step back and analyze everything in my business.

Q: How has hiring individuals on the autism spectrum impacted your business?

We have nine people working casually or part-time in the business, with six of them on the autism spectrum. The majority of our workforce is on the spectrum, and what’s so great about this is that, while it’s something I’m passionate about and was my focus from the start, it’s also been a smart business decision.

We’ve been meeting our regular growth targets, and it’s not holding us back—in fact, it’s helping us in many ways because they are fantastic employees. Taking that step to hire, train, and learn how to support people on the Autism spectrum has allowed them to thrive and perform at their best.

As a designer with a passion for meaningful architecture, Elmira Aghsaei has always been interested in creating designs that transform communities, prioritize social sustainability, and enhance health and wellness.

Elmira’s journey into the field began with an interest in art, science, and wellness. She found the perfect balance in architecture, allowing her to be creative and technical while building spaces that positively impact people’s physical and mental well-being through Architecture.

Always having an entrepreneurial spirit, Elmira was drawn to starting her own architecture firm, but felt uncertain due to the risks involved, especially with the liabilities of her field. Her journey started with connecting with people outside her architecture and construction network, and a partner at a law firm introduced her to WeBC. She began taking WeBC’s free programs, workshops, and events, where she was referred to the Peer Mentorship Program for Women Business Owners.

She was matched with a mentor through the Peer Mentorship Program and later connected with a few other mentors through WeBC and her growing network. Each mentor brought a unique perspective and expertise, whether it was goal-setting, branding, business planning, or navigating the architecture industry.

Elmira also appreciated working with a mentor who understood her industry, and learned how to build a brand that would align with her big dreams. Beyond professional advice, Sara’s positivity, mental support, and reassurance were vital during the start-up’s early days.

Elmira decided to take the leap and start Elmira Aghsaei Architecture in 2023 and now runs a full-service architecture firm serving Metro Vancouver and beyond. In her 13 years of practicing architecture, she has contributed to projects shaping both British Columbia and Canada, including a 42-story residential tower in downtown Vancouver and a 52-story mixed-use tower as well as BC’s largest school developments in history. She is currently working on one of y, furthering her mission to create spaces that make a lasting positive impact.

Client Q&A

Q: What made you want to become an architect?

I’ve always been very interested in the arts, math, and physics, but I was torn between those worlds. I was also interested in psychology and health. I know that a lot impacts our health, like something as simple as the light we’re exposed to, and as a very sensitive person, I’m impacted by the space I’m in. That’s why I thought: I’m sure other people are being impacted too, but they might not be aware of it. I realized I could study architecture and be creative while being very scientific. It’s a combination of everything I’ve always been interested in.

I now know that it’s even more multifaceted than I thought. It includes psychology, sociology, and health, so I became interested in understanding the impact of architecture on the well-being of the people who use the space, and how they feel in that environment.

Q: What made you want to join the WeBC Peer Growth Mentorship program?

I reached out to WeBC, and they told me about their free programs, so I started attending events religiously. I had incorporated my business, but I hadn’t officially started at that time.

While taking these courses with WeBC, I realized that I had to take the leap and just do it. I had to jump off the cliff, so I started full-time in the summer of 2023. That’s when WeBC recommended their mentorship program.

That’s when I joined the Peer Mentorship Program and was matched with a mentor. Over time, I also connected with other mentors through my network. Each one helped me in a different area—from business fundamentals to mindset, branding, and marketing. I’m so grateful to all of them.

One of my main mentors, Sara Wang (vivcoaching.ca), met with me weekly (even though it was supposed to be monthly!) because I had so many questions and was hungry to learn. She helped me believe in myself and guided me through the early days. Since then, my revenue has grown 12 times in my second fiscal year, and mentorship was a big part of it.

Q: What were the outcomes of working with a WeBC mentor?

What I loved about my mentor was her very positive mindset. We had a couple of sessions at the beginning focused on just writing down my dreams and my goals, without any limitations and just thinking however big I wanted.

That was a fun experience because our minds usually put limits on our dreams; whereas, when you think, there shouldn’t be any limit. She taught me that there is no limit to your dreams.

She also shared her insights on architecture. Her father was an architect, so she was exposed to it and had first-hand experience. She taught me that once you enter a niche, you need to stick to that niche. In terms of whether you want to do high-end or low-end, the way you start and how people get to know you is going to be your brand. It will be very difficult to start in the low-end market and then work your way up to the high-end. That was a really important lesson for me. Having mentors with experience in different industries and business models gave me a more holistic understanding of entrepreneurship. Most of all, they gave me the emotional support I needed—especially during the uncertain early days of launching my firm.

Q: What advice would you give to someone starting their own business?

I think the biggest lesson is to just trust yourself and not be scared. There are so many opportunities out there, you just need to seek it out. WeBC is a great example, there are many ways to find support along the way.

It’s hard to start, and entrepreneurship is a test of resilience. The more resilient you are, the more successful you’ll become.

Zoe Stratis began her career as an artist but was always drawn to the idea of helping people. In 2019, tragedy struck when she lost her son, Wilder, at 4 days old, to an injury he sustained during labour. Grief-stricken and searching for resources to cope with her loss, she found options were limited and learned that other bereaved families were experiencing the same struggle.

“I wanted to access support for my grief and my loss, and I just found that there was nothing comprehensive in my community. It was very difficult to find anything online. I couldn’t find anyone, and I needed them. I started talking to other bereaved parents who had similar experiences, and I thought: this is something I can do. This is a way that I can help people.”

This inspired Zoe to pursue counselling, with a focus on perinatal mental health and perinatal loss, so she could help others navigate their grief. Wilder Way Counselling specializes in support for individuals and groups dealing with grief and loss, especially during pregnancy or after birth. Additionally, Zoe offers consulting services and training courses tailored for healthcare workers to address the psychological aspects of perinatal loss and how staff can support grieving families.

“I started volunteering in my community. I helped put on the annual perinatal and infant loss awareness Walk. I sit on the perinatal Mental Health Committee and volunteer for my local hospice. I like to be in my community. I started getting all these connections figuring out how I could help and then my local hospital called me asking if I wanted to consult. So I developed a course to teach healthcare workers, doctors, nurses, obstetricians how to deal with the psychological aspect of perinatal loss within a medical setting, because that was one of the main things that all these parents identified as not going very well.”

Starting her business from the ground up, Zoe began researching ways to connect with experienced business owners to learn about managing marketing and finances. She came across WeBC’s One-to-One Mentoring program and felt it was the perfect fit.

Zoe connected with her mentor over their similar business structures and passion for supporting others in their various stages of healing. Her mentor provided concrete insights into managing the back end of a business while empathizing with the ups and downs of entrepreneurship.

A key takeaway for Zoe was the confidence and mindset her mentor instilled in her. Previously overwhelmed and struggling with imposter syndrome, Zoe’s mentor helped her believe in herself and recognize her expertise, encouraging her to keep pushing forward to reach her goals.

Zoe highly recommends finding a mentor and is grateful for organizations like WeBC that offer these resources. She now believes the key to success for any small business owner is to find a mentor who can help foster business growth.

Client Q&A

Q: Why did you decide to take the One-to-One Mentoring program?
A: I was looking for resources because I knew I would need help starting a business without money and experience. When I was looking online, I found WeBC’s mentorship program and thought it looked amazing.

Aside from the funding I received to start my business, this program has been the most valuable thing keeping me on track. As an entrepreneur, you come into it with your specialty, but you also have to run your business, manage your website, and keep your books. It’s like having a million jobs rolled into one. Without this mentor keeping me on track and helping me with my mindset, I think I would still be overwhelmed and have imposter syndrome.

I’ve talked to a bunch of other successful business owners, and almost all of them mentioned mentorship when I asked how they became successful. I understand it’s super important to have someone in your corner who knows the lay of the land.

Q: Were there any major successes coming out of the program?
A: My mentor was unbelievable. I started getting hospital gigs when she was mentoring me. I don’t know whether that’s causation or correlation, but I had a few big wins during our mentorship and I couldn’t believe it was happening to me. She gave me the capacity to accept those wins into my life and not feel scared or overwhelmed or like I was too new for this.

She also helped by giving me the confidence to move forward in my business, making me realize that my experience actually does make me somewhat of an expert on this. She helped me change my mindset and helped me feel like I deserve my place.

Q: What’s next for Wilder Way Counselling?
A: I was pregnant with my second son within eight months of losing Wilder and I had a healthy pregnancy and gave birth to my son, Huxley, who is now 3. He gives me all the joy and motivation to just keep on going, keep doing this and keep helping people.

Given the nature of virtual therapy and the glass ceiling that being a one-on-one therapist puts on what you can do, the future of my business looks like running more online courses, online groups, and getting into more hospitals to offer my services.

A group is more financially accessible for the participants, and they create strong bonds during the time they’re together. When the group ends, participants get to keep in touch with each other. I’ve been in a group like this when I was training for coaching perinatal loss—and it had that same effect. I still talk to some of those people every single day.

I’m working hard to continue gaining the trust of my audience so they’ll sign up for these groups, allowing them to leave with a lasting community and some real tangible ideas on how to lean on community to process their grief and honour their loved ones. I think it’s a skill that needs to be learned because we live in a grief-illiterate society.

Q: If you were to advise anyone starting their own business, what advice would you give?

A: I would say train yourself in the back end. Keep your bookkeeping and finances super tight because it’s a slippery fish. Once it gets away from you, you find yourself at year-end sifting through a pile. Do it every month, every two months, or every three months—don’t leave it until the end of the year.

I would also encourage new business owners to access the resources available, like the mentorship programs and loans offered through organizations like WeBC. Those resources are there for us to use and they’ll help you succeed. Plus, there’s free money out there, which is imperative for many small new businesses.

As a Registered Massage Therapist (RMT) and educator, Lindsey Sloan has dedicated over 17 years to the profession. Her rewarding career led her to teach at two RMT programs in BC, where she shared her expertise with the next generation of therapists. Now, she is embarking on her greatest adventure yet, opening a massage therapy school in Kelowna, Sena College.

Sena College of Massage Therapy in Kelowna provides a two-year diploma program that prepares students both academically and practically for a fulfilling career in massage therapy. Opening its doors to the first cohort in 2025, Lindsey is excited to offer students hands-on training, theoretical knowledge, and a supportive leadership team to encourage personal and professional growth.

When she decided to tackle the major undertaking of opening a school, Lindsey began looking at different loan programs. She found traditional banks and venture capitalists weren’t equipped to support her financially, as funding a school presents unique challenges compared to funding a product. A colleague recommended WeBC because their eligibility criteria are more inclusive than traditional banks.

Believing in her vision, WeBC worked alongside Lindsey to perfect her loan application. As the BC Loan Fund Partner of the WEOC National Loan Fund, they provided support at each step. Lindsey was successful in accessing the capital, which was essential to cover her start-up costs including construction permits, renovations, and essential equipment for her students. She recounts how grateful she was to not only get the loan but also for the support she received from the team at WeBC.

“Working with WeBC has been a fantastic experience, especially in terms of communication. Supporting women in business is so important, and it’s great to see more women gaining support in areas like venture capital, which has traditionally been male-dominated. It’s been wonderful to collaborate with them, and I truly appreciate the opportunity.”

Lindsey is thrilled to open Sena College’s doors for the first time in 2025. She envisions creating a school where students thrive and develop into skilled professionals who make meaningful contributions to diverse communities. Her goal is to prepare students to provide services to a wide range of populations, fostering a culture of inclusivity and care.

Client Q&A

Q: What made you decide to open Sena College?
I’ve always wanted to be in a profession that helps people. I looked into a few career paths, at first I wanted to be a pediatrician but as I got older I realized I didn’t want to go to medical school. I was also interested in pursuing education and becoming a teacher. Someone once told me I had strong hands, so I decided to look into massage therapy.

In my massage therapy practice, I have a preferred area of practice called manual lymphatic drainage (MLD). MLD promotes the movement of lymphatic fluid out of swollen areas. I typically treat clients post-surgery or radiation when there has been damage or removal to the lymphatic system.
I also had the opportunity to teach at two different massage therapy diploma programs in BC. I’ve found that helping people in general and then moving into the school side of things has been so rewarding by teaching students, empowering them with knowledge and watching them grow.

So really, my two interests came together with being in healthcare and being in education. I wanted to continue educating and it was important to me to offer students a school that was RMT-owned and operated.

Q: How did you first learn about WeBC’s loan program?

I heard about WeBC through the grapevine when looking for different options to fund the opening of the school.

I was hearing from investors and traditional banks that what I was asking for was one of the most challenging files that they’ve dealt with because a school is different from funding a product and selling it.
When I connected with WeBC, I was impressed by their commitment to being women-run and supporting other women in business. That was especially important to me, as Sena is currently owned and operated solely by women. I was able to get the loan through WeBC’s partner, the WEOC National Loan Fund. It has been a wonderfully positive experience, and everyone has been fantastic to work with.

Q: How did your loan help open Sena College?

We used the funding for the tenant improvements to transform the space into a school. We did a massive gut renovation of the entire area; it was a big undertaking.

We also used the funding for equipment that’s involved in setting up a massage therapy school. We had to buy the electric tables, portable tables, and so much more. It’s expensive to buy, so I’m grateful for the loan.

Q: What advice would you offer aspiring entrepreneurs looking to launch their own business?

I would say talk to other people who have started businesses. I never thought about starting a business on my own; I was happy in practice and working at schools. The idea to start Sena landed in my lap, and my only experience with business was as a sole proprietor working as an RMT. That’s very different from launching a business from the ground up.

It’s been a huge learning curve, especially on the financial and real estate side of things. I’m wearing a lot of hats, and learning as I go. I really wish I had someone to talk to about the entrepreneurial journey from the start, it would have made a big difference.

Fable Book Parlour

Location: Revelstoke

The Fable Book Parlour’s mission is to provide Revelstoke with a thriving indie book and music store. Opening in 2021 after the previous bookstore in town closed, for the first four months the shop operated exclusively out of a bookmobile.

It is tricky to successfully operate niche stores in small towns, but feeling strongly that the town would support a bookstore, Fable Book Parlour saw an opportunity to put together two of the things they loved most in life: literature and music. Fable is a place where people come for book or music recommendations, artists and musicians meet and perform, people sit and play our store piano, buy books/vinyl, or simply relax and enjoy the atmosphere.

“Our aim is to provide an experience for our customers by creating a space that takes people away from the busy’ness of everyday life and transports them to a place of charm and whimsy. Our business has been a success not only because we’ve made smart business choices, but because our customers can feel how much we love it. In an industry with slim profit margins, innovation and creativity are key. We love coming up with new ideas to expand our business in novel (pun intended) ways and to always provide the very best customer experience,” says Stacy Batchelor, Co-owner.

This fall they also opened The Sound Cellar – a new project under the Fable umbrella that operates in a new location in downtown Revelstoke and hosts music lessons, live music, workshops, rehearsal sessions, amateur recording and special events.

“We’re excited to explore ideas like karaoke nights, ladies open-mic nights, drag performances, and low-pressure new performer nights,” says Stacy. “Oh-and the Fable Bookmobile is still around! We take it to music festivals in the summer-so far Salmon Arm Roots & Blues and Kaslo Jazz Fest.”

Wild Soul Body Sugaring

Wild Soul Body Sugaring

Location: Cranbrook

Sugaring is the future of clean, green hair removal.

What is sugaring, you ask? Sugaring is a superior hair removal technique for all areas of the body that has been practiced for centuries. Believed to have originated in ancient Egypt and rumoured to have been the method of hair removal used by Cleopatra herself, sugaring paste is made of sugar, water and lemon… that’s it! It’s so natural you can eat it.

“I gather a thick ball of paste in my hand and draw it onto the skin in the opposite direction of hair growth and with a quick flick of my wrist I remove the paste in the direction of the hair growth, and subsequently the hair,” explains Shannon Wilson, owner.

“The sugar paste is non-toxic, the technique of removal is different than waxing, and there is considerably less waste in the process. There are natural, high-quality ingredients in the skin cleansers, tonics, powder, and mask I use; the paste is organic, vegan and cruelty-free; and the gloves and table covers I use are biodegradable and recyclable.

By using the products I do, I am reducing my ecological footprint – creating a business that is sustainable and less environmentally impactful… all while you get incredible results and smooth, hairless skin!”

Donna Rodman Studio

Location: Nelson

Donna Rodman discovered a gift that she did not know she possessed; approaching retirement, and rethinking her possibilities of continuing to be a Landscape Architect, Donna decided to explore how far she could go as a fine art painter.

Having both a love of detail and courage when working in colour, these attributes led her to conclude she could be a late bloomer, just budding. The artist believes her potential had been hidden under the professional career building she spent 30 years cultivating in Landscape Architecture. Today, Donna has decided to build a fresh dream that will fulfill her desire for unrestricted creativity.

When you meet her, you will find Donna quiet, unassuming, and embracing the new chapter to enhance her rich life. She is always willing to share lessons learned.

“The variety of [my] work allows a collector to select what they think is unique and what speaks to their heart. I do provide a story to each painting,” says Donna M. Rodman, owner. “To fall in love with an art piece is subjective to the collector. Perhaps uniqueness comes from variety, international perspectives, and an environmental message that is typically part of my fine art painting.”

“The paintings featured in my calendars and cards are one-of-a-kind and many of the scenes are based in BC and Canada,” explains Olive Chan, artist. “Many folks have commented on how it’s difficult to find calendars with quality artwork, particularly paired with inspirational scripture verses. I’m also proud of the fact that all my products are printed in Canada.

Stories Told on Film

Location: Nanaimo

“What sets Stories Told on Film apart is its unique approach to storytelling through the art of witnessing,” explains Kim Holl, owner. “I create an intimate and sacred space where your true essence can unfold, offering you the chance to see yourself in a new light and share your story with profound authenticity. There is no preparation, no ‘practice makes perfect.’ Your soul is brought to light, and through the editing process, all that is unnecessary fades away, revealing the golden thread and the essence of your story.”

Stories Told on Film captures the lives and essence of ordinary people in an artful way. Steeped in the art of witnessing, a tender space is created where you can feel the sanctity of your own dwelling, allowing your narrative to emerge, offering a new way to see, and be seen.

In the process, the wisdom harvesting often awakens your inner journey, along with a deeper sense of purpose. Spoken from this hallowed place is empowering, pulling you deeper into your own story while drawing the listener closer. Filmed close-up in black and white, everything unimportant falls away.

Soft natural light. An intimate setting. Just you in front of the lens. Quiet, peaceful, only the sound of your breath in and out. A stirring within gives rise to an unfaltering voice that is quiet, strong, and sure. No rush, no timeline, no agenda. Your film becomes a legacy, etched into the hearts of those whom you cherish. More than a film, it is a transformational experience celebrating the beauty of the human Soul.

Location: Delta

Doha Moghrabi offers Coaching and Facilitation for clarity and coherence. This season, she would like to introduce the Flow Game, a tool for tapping into deeper wisdom through questions, images and play!

“Bring your most deeply held question and let’s play, cycle and flow with the forces and wisdom of nature. It is a game for one or many; play individually or as a team. The reflections will stay with you – and mature for days to come – after your experience with the game itself,” explains Doha.

“Dialogue, play, wisdom, and any medium you are comfortable with adds to the richness of the experience. It’s a unique game that helps us step into our courage, vulnerability and agency. There is also the unsaid, the negative space in the game. We show up and play with the willingness to listen deeply, beyond the initial words. You do not need to know how to do that, the game and your host (yours truly) will show you how.”

Location: Vancouver

Wanderruff makes dog collars, harnesses, and leashes out of recycled water bottles for the wagging adventurer — merging comfort and consciousness. They focus on using recycled materials in their products and donate to sustainable causes with every purchase!

“Shopping local is important because it directly supports the people and businesses in our community – people like us at Wanderruff, who pour our hearts into what we create,” says Anisa Musmary, owner.

At Wanderruff, for example, we source materials with sustainability in mind and use eco-friendly practices because we care about both our community and the planet. When you shop local, you’re supporting businesses that care about the same things you do. Every purchase, shoutout, or word-of-mouth recommendation from our community keeps us going.
Through our partnership with 1% for the Planet, we donate a portion of every sale to environmental causes that help protect the planet we all share. But it’s not just about money – we also focus on doing our part by using sustainable materials, like recycled bottles and deadstock fabric, reducing waste, and supporting eco-friendly practices.

We believe that giving back isn’t just a one-time thing; it’s baked into everything we do. Whether it’s creating products that help pet parents make greener choices or supporting causes that align with our values, we aim to make a positive impact. Our goal is to build something meaningful that benefits not only our customers and their pups but also the planet and the community around us.”

Location: Victoria

Katherine (Kat) Williams is the ‘thinker tinkerer’ behind Katswi Creations. She’s a scroll saw artist, a writer, and illustrator, who creates fun, funny, and fantastical things. Kat uses a scroll saw to make animal-themed wooden figures, magnets, ornaments, and puzzles. Her ideal target market is “people whose lives are enhanced because of their relationships with companion animals.”

Kat’s pieces capture the affection we have with our companion animals, and each pet and their person can be purchased as a duo. She can then make additional people and pets that articulate with the base pair so people can create their unique pet family by adding, for example, a black cat or a brown floppy-eared dog.

“People typically spend more time in their communities than elsewhere. When people spend money in their communities, they are supporting local product and service providers who, being proximally closer to their consumers are generally more receptive to customer needs, which in turn helps them fine-tune their offerings regionally. This reciprocal relationship fosters a closer community,” explains Kat.

“I love meeting community members who tell me about their special relationships with their pets and meeting their pet families¾something only possible at local, outdoor markets. Through these connections, I’ve adapted my products as I receive requests to create items that accommodate their growing pet families.”

Made For Fish, Not Just Made

MTB Lures owner Michelle Finch set up a small store in her town offering custom-made fishing lures and spinners for Canadian lakes and rivers. Designed and manufactured in Telkwa, their USP is that the lures are made by a fisherman, who designed them to contain weight.

“Lures need to be made for fish!” says Michelle, whose lures are designed utilizing the UV spectrum, which takes into account how fish see and what colors they see.

Michelle is also all about community. She created a ‘learn to fish’ and small fishing derby at her local lake; she has 12 volunteers; gave away BBQ, food, prizes, and ice cream (all made possible by donations from her community) and had 400 people attend last year. She also does free fishing classes, and takes people fishing to learn the ecosystem, fishing regulations, types of fish. Michelle also upcycles rods and tackle, repairing them and giving them out for free to people in need.

“Unfortunately with the access to buy online, we have lost touch with the quality behind the product,” she says.

“Fifth of May” is otherwise known as a cause shop. It all started as a means for owner Shirley Low to donate 10% of all her proceeds to BC Cancer Research, and has also has allowed her to channel her passion for creativity and love for simple and minimalistic designs.

Natural elements, such as beech wood, and neutral colours can be found in all her designs for lanyards, keychains, essential oil diffusers and much more. Materials are sourced from trusted local and/or Canadian suppliers as a way to support fellow small businesses as well.

“I believe in supporting dreams and more importantly the artisans and shops in our local community. It’s all about supporting one another.
Location: Surrey

Happy Family Baby Gift Store Ltd was founded in 2024 in Surrey, British Columbia. The company’s creation was driven by a desire to offer high-quality baby products that prioritize eco-friendliness and safety, inspired by concerns over allergies caused by conventional baby items. Founder Aye Moh Thu established the company to fill a gap in the market for allergy-free and eco-friendly baby products.

The company’s mission revolves around offering products that provide peace of mind to parents by using safe, sustainable materials that are gentle on babies and promote a healthier planet. The emphasis is on family, eco-friendly practices, and ensuring every child’s well-being through responsible craftsmanship.

“Shopping local is a powerful way to support our community, environment, and economy. When we buy from local businesses, our money stays within the community, creating jobs and fostering economic stability,” says owner Aye Moh Thu. “Small businesses often source their goods from nearby, which means a reduced carbon footprint compared to items transported over long distances. This helps the environment and promotes more sustainable practices.”

Rugs by Roo

Location: Vancouver

Rugs by Roo is a Vancouver-based online retailer of healthy, sustainable and ethically made area rugs. At Rugs by Roo, they believe that rug shopping should be fun. Customers shouldn’t have to research hours to understand what flame retardants, chemical sprays and glues can do to their bodies.

“The decorative rug market is a $2.5 billion market in North America. A whopping 80% of this market are comprised of synthetic, low-quality, fast-fashion rugs that are lined with toxic chemicals. We are talking about micro-plastics, PFAS chemicals, phthalates, BPA and VOCs, all of which are proven to cause cancer, infertility, respiratory illnesses, liver disease, kidney disease and even neurological defects in children. These rugs are often disposed of within 5 years once all the chemicals wear off and it loses its shine and glory, or when the style or colour trend dies down. They end up in landfills (only 9% of rugs get recycled), where they live for over 100 years before they decompose,” explains owner Sandy Wong.

‘Our rugs provide a beautiful, conscious choice for those who want style without compromising health or the planet. Second, based on our customers’ feedback and the data we collect on our website about what sells or doesn’t sell, we are able to identify gaps in the market that becomes an opportunity and informs our in-house product line. Tuft Love was launched as a result of customers telling us they want GOTS certified organic materials in a washable rug. Our commitment is for healthy, sustainable and ethical rugs to be accessible to all families and it starts with putting better products out into the market.”

Rugs by Roo take the guesswork out for consumers, ensuring every rug is free from toxic materials and supports eco-friendly and ethical practices. Their curated solution also includes their very own Tuft Love Collection, the first GOTS certified organic washable rug collection in the world.

“There aren’t many shops in the Okanagan that cater to guys looking for some more mature styles. We aren’t a skateboard shop, we aren’t an outdoor store, we have everyday clothes that guys would wear to the office, or out for dinner,” says owner Amanda Homeniuk. “Plus, we only source ethically made brands selling eco-conscious products. Bonus.”

Wren Boutique

Location: Bowen Island

Wren is located on picturesque Bowen Island off the coast of Vancouver. A contemporary fashion and lifestyle boutique with a focus on modern sustainable Canadian designs, Wren has provided locals and visitors with curated, classically effortless and wearable fashions since 2010.

Aimed at fashion-conscious, ethically minded women between the ages of 25 and 45, Wren features curated and elevated independent slow fashion designs sourced both locally and internationally, with a primary focus on sustainably produced Canadian brands.

“Shopping small and supporting local business has always been important and in our present day world this cannot be overstated. Independent businesses are the lifeline of every community. They are the establishments that define the character of our neighbourhoods and foster community among its residents. The relationships created between customers and those that work in independent business frequently go beyond the transaction and often become familial,” explains owner Erin Norgan.

“Independent businesses are run by real people— not boards, stockholders or algorithms. They offer a more authentic kind of care and quality in their product because their work is a reflection of themselves. Instead of focusing on the next market expansion or their next round of fundraising, a small business owner focuses on the details. This allows them an originality and variety that simply cannot be found in larger corporations.”
